1 Home + 2 EcoGrid Products = Driveway, Pathway & Garden Upgraded!

John Everett, a delighted domestic client of ours, just shared photos of his "home improvement" project which made use of 2 of our leading products. Let's take a look in today's blog.

EcoGrid E50 transformed John's driveway, while the Flexible Edge system perfected his front garden.

EcoGrid Blog - Driveway, Pathway & Garden Upgraded!

Easy-to-fit, eco-friendly and guaranteed for 20 years, EcoGrid is probably being installed in a driveway near you!

Here, our paving made possible a great looking gravelled driveway and pathway with some hidden perks.

It's what's underneath that counts; the World's No. 1 Permeable Paving creates a robust and long-lasting surface that will be sufficiently load bearing and stay virtually maintenance free once installed. The porosity ensures water is able to freely drain through the topping and base to naturally dissipate into the water table.

New to EcoGrid's offerings is the Flexible Edge garden edging system, which we have available in any quantity - from one length all the way up to thousands of metres!

Whether used in gardens, lawns, driveways, patios - or a little bit of a hybrid like shown here - you cannot get a neater finish with any other product of this type. Really simple to install, pin and shape with lasting durability.

A nice, crisp and distinctive look that gives a landscape defined separation, wouldn't you agree?

2 New Driveways Perfected with EcoGrid Porous Paving

Every day the World's No. 1 Permeable Paving transforms a driveway near you!

As you'll see in today's blog, an EcoGrid-resin bound stone combination provides a highly aesthetic parking surface whether installed in a home or business; a surface that's robust, stable, load-bearing and porous.

For starters let's take a look at before and after photos of an old rundown driveway recently given a makeover by Essex Permeable Surfaces Ltd:

EcoGrid in Driveway Installation, Essex Permeable PavingEcoGrid in Driveway Installation, Essex Permeable PavingEcoGrid in Driveway Installation, Essex Permeable PavingEcoGrid in Driveway Installation, Essex Permeable Paving

Now those are some smooth results!

Next up, Adam Power shows off photos of his driveway and parking area that has been perfected using EcoGrid paving. The customer opted for the terracotta colour option to blend with surroundings.

It doesn't just look great; the grids concealed underneath the surface will ensure that any water hitting it will freely drain through the topping and the base system to naturally dissipate into the water table. As such this SuDS-compliant driveway effectively works towards flood risk prevention.

Thanks for the photos, Adam.

Landscaping materials 'fit for purpose' Who is responsible?

OK, so no names, no pack drill!

I recently attended one of our many surveys to supply and potentially for one of our approved contractors, to fit a permeable grass filled access route, leading to a grass filled car-park to a sports centre. I have to say that I even I was taken aback at the poor quality of the surfacing as existing and even more surprised that this was supposed to be reinforced plastic paving, on the surface that; to the lay-person would be similar to our World leading Ecogrid:Ecoraster.

undefined

When you stand back, it looks poor but not terrible, but look closer.

undefined

Smashed grids literally ripped up showing there was a lack of locking system to the surface

undefined

Areas without grids, showing that the product was far too thin and too shallow

undefined

Very un-safe surfacing now with plenty of trip hazards.

So this prompted the question as to fault. I was told that the surface was about twelve years old but "started tearing up months after it was laid"

1. The seller is at fault for publishing misleading information and or mis-information about the capabilities of the product offered?

2. The client/council/ is at fault for not insisting on a certain level of quality and a lack of research or consultation?

3. The architect is at fault because he didn't research the quality of the product properly?

4. The tender document writer is at fault because the ubiquitous phrase .....such and such product 'or similar' was put in?

5. The main contractor is at fault because they did not ensure the quality of materials?

6. The sub-contractor is at fault because they go for the cheapest of this type of product, regardless of quality?

7. All are at fault because of a degree of apathy pre, during and after the installation, boxed ticked...moving on?

Now WE know that these type of products are usually imported from Asia.

WE know that they have no locking system.

WE know that they are way too thin to be fit for all but the lightest of duty.

But do the clients know this? They can only rely on the information given by the seller. Until such time that the UK landscape supply industry takes ownership for the supply of poor quality materials and the supplier is held ultimately liable for the product's failure if it has been fitted as per instructions, then we will continue to see the failure of these types of installations and that does no-one any good. We lose as we know our Ecogrid product is the best and we can stand by our product's longevity, quality and loading capacities; but we are unwillingly joined to 'a plastic grid failure'. The client loses because they don't get what they thought they were paying for. The contractor loses because they are paired with a poor quality installation even if they were not at fault. In fact:

The only people who win are the sellers who get they money and get away without blame....usually.

I would love to hear thoughts on this and any experience for similar scenarios in different sectors perhaps.

Ecogrid versus another alternative

When EcoGrid porous paving is placed against other alternatives that would appear to do the same job on the market, one of which we've pictured below let us call this type DP (Dense product). The fact is that, on the surface (pardon the pun) they would seem to do the same job.

(shock, gasp...)

EcoGrid Blog, vs. Higher Density Alternatives

Like EcoGrid, these DP pavers can also take the weight of articulated lorries and can be grass or gravel filled as required. However, that is where the similarities ends.

That is because...

  • EcoGrid E50 is laid at a rate of approximately 600 square metres per man, per day. The DP grids offered elsewhere would, in comparison, be laid at approximately 200 metres per man, per day (3x the labour cost!). This is because Ecogrid arrives on-site as 1.33 square metres of grid or 12 units, pre-locked together. A fitter lifts of the sheet and places on the pre-prepared ground, lifts off the next sheet and clicks simply, securely  and swiftly in place. THe DP products arrive as individual units, have to be lined up and often have no real locking mechanism.

  • You get 57.33 square metres of EcoGrid E50 on a pallet and only around 19sqm of the DP products. That means haulage would cost three times as much!

  • Semi retail sites sell these DP products in the region of £37.55 per square metre, whereas EcoGrid E50 would be only £17.42. Yes, a grid product that offers similar characteristics that is almost twice the price to buy as the original EcoGrid with it's 20 year guarantee!
  • The DP products have a far greater surface area of plastic. In fact we would say that with the DP product you see 50:50 of the plastic and fill material, whereas with Ecogrid, you see very little plastic at all.

EcoGrid Blog, vs. Higher Density Alternatives

So, if this DP product can be:

  • Twice the price

  • Three times the haulage cost

  • Three times the cost to lay

Why on earth would you even consider it?

Get in touch today and go with EcoGrid, the World's No. 1 Permeable Paving, for your next project.

You won't find its unique and patented inter-locking system in alternative products, and that's what makes our permeable, long-lasting, aesthetic grids super-quick to install; just one reason they're unrivalled globally. Plus, Ecogrid is available in huge UK stock and massive stock in the factory waiting to be delivered, it is available in four different colours to match the infill

and has a great range of accessories, to name but two:

Our curving piece which allows the building of any radius and any level to any installation without the need for cutting.

Our angle piece which allows a lay from the horizontal to the vertical, for example a gravel filled car park with continuous seamless embankment support

The Smart Choice: Why Landscaping Professionals Choose EcoGrid Permeable Paving

Landscaping professionals, like the many Approved Installers we've partnered with, all know that porous paving is the smart choice when it comes to that next project requiring high (long-lasting) quality.

No matter the size of said project, these modern surfaces provide a robust, low maintenance solution that are not only great to look at from the outside but also fully permeable on the inside. That permeability could mean a project is more easily approved given ever-increasing restrictions on hard to soft landscaping.

Erosion problems that builders and landscapers often face can be eliminated because water can now freely absorb into the soil, as can problems with water runoff as porous paving ensures that water reaches the soil quicker and therefore less pollutants from the ground are carried into local rivers.

EcoGrid Permeable Paving - Home Driveway Install

Introducing EcoGrid, The World's No. 1 Permeable Paving!

Our Product Range of world-leading, eco-friendly ground reinforcement grids made from 100% recycled plastic ‒ ideal for SuDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) applications, car parks, driveways, pathways, equestrian areas, temporary access routes, tree root protection, and lots more.

Whatever the choice of EcoGrid product, our paving is super easy to fit thanks to its unique inter-locking system. In fact, you can lay as much as 100m² per hour, per person.

A Freshly Installed EcoGrid Resin Bound Stone Driveway – We "Approve!"

Creative Stone Driveways Ltd

recently joined our Approved Installer network and just completed a new resin bound stone driveaway install using EcoGrid. Let's get a peek at it in today's blog!

Did you know you can search for EcoGrid Approved Installers in your area? Take a look. Your firm could appear there too – we are currently looking reputable fitters, resellers and stockists of our premier products.

EcoGrid - Resin Bound Driveaway Installation

With the help of EcoGrid, the World's No. 1 Permeable Paving, Creative Stone transformed this rundown driveway...

...into this!

EcoGrid - Resin Bound Driveaway Installation

So, how was it done? Check out these step-by-step photos coming up.

Excavation can be from as little as 180mm for standard vehicle domestic applications and that brings about a number of inherent advantages, the likes of:

  • Less excavtion meaning less waste to landfill and quicker preparation
  • Less requirement for hard-core
  • Swift installation (up to 100m² per hour, per person)
  • No inconvenience to clients; grids are immediately load-bearing

EcoGrid - Resin Bound Driveaway Installation EcoGrid - Resin Bound Driveaway Installation

The installation process of EcoGrid and resin bound systems thereafter typically begins with a type 3 reduced fines or clean sharp angular stone hard-core base laid to required depths, and a membrane layer laid on the top to stabilise the ground where necessary.

When our world renowned grids are laid, they are filled with the same sharp angular stone as the screed layer. Any shapes or angular cuts can be achieved with a standard angle grinder. The resin system is mixed in an industry standard force mixer and then floated over the top of the filled grid.

EcoGrid - Resin Bound Driveaway InstallationEcoGrid - Resin Bound Driveaway Installation  EcoGrid - Resin Bound Driveaway Installation

This new EcoGrid-resin bound stone combination provides a highly aesthetic surface to a home or business premises, installed internally or externally to provide a surface that's robust, load-bearing and porous.

The permeability ensures that any water hitting the surface will freely drain through the resin bound topping and through the EcoGrid base system to naturally dissipate into the water table.

And that's an obvious advantage in current times as this surface is free draining and goes towards effective flood risk prevention – it's SuDS compliant and requires no planning permission; an important fact to note given the surface water regulations recently introduced in the UK.

Here's a closer look at the superb results:

EcoGrid - Resin Bound Driveaway Installation

For driveways like this one, EcoGrid means you have a permeable surface that's load bearing up to artic. level, surface material that doesn't move around, with a reduced sub-base necessity, additional membrane support, and many more benefits (too many to list here quite frankly!)

Flash Floods: Urgent Action Is Required, Act Now with EcoGrid Permeable Paving

In the UK we've been feeling the harsh impact of climate change and a fundamental shift in our weather with recent flash flooding. Sadly this is said to only increase in intensity and frequency in the future.

Defra, a government environmental department, has revealed plans to invest £2.5bn on building flood defence schemes across the country to better protect an additional 300,000 homes by 2021 – but MPs say their own recommendations for important new measures are being rejected, with little justification.

While they support the "considerable work" being done on flooding, MPs have spoken out on existing schemes being "fragmented, inefficient and ineffective flood management" as relates to flood impact home insurance, building rules and local authority planning decisions.

So too, AWMS warns that we must "build better, more robust upstream water management with capacity to minimise the threat of heavier, more intense rainfall." The water management body urges immediate action and the need to adopt Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to prepare ourselves for the worst.

EcoGrid Flash Flooding Blog - UK Cars in Flood

EcoGrid Flash Flooding Blog - Permeable Paving Solutions

In fact, it has come to light that the government actually removed requirements for SuDS (previously on all new developments), from the new Housing And Planning bill at the last minute.

Step in, EcoGrid!

Our world renowned permeable paving offers a sustainable ground reinforcement system which allows rainwater to drain into the ground via natural methods. Furthermore, it's the strongest porous paving out there and can withstand up to 800 tonnes with its heavy duty load bearing capacity.

EcoGrid helps to alleviate surface water run-off and flooding issues and can be used in conjunction with artificial turf, gravel, grass or other loose fill materials. It complies with all Sustainable Drainage Systems regulations as a means of minimising the quantity of surface water run-off and improving quality of water too.

Without resilient SuDS design practices in the UK more flooding is sadly a guarantee.

And with shaky management of flood protection by government, squabbles, retractions and delays, whether you're a homeowner or developer it might be time to take matters into your own hands.

EcoGrid Flash Flooding Blog - Installing Permeable Paving

EcoGrid Flash Flooding Blog - Installing Permeable Paving

On average, one person can lay 100 square metres in an hour, making for rapid installation times. Skilled labour isn't always required either; we see customers often choosing to re-surface their private driveways, for example, themselves and with great results.

There's no infrastructure needed (that being drains and soakaways), there's less excavation required (that means less spoil to landfill), less hardcore (supplies are running low), the grids are quicker to install (less labour charges) and the entire surfacing will last well over 20 years (not a claim that alternatives can make).

We offer several products that are completely free draining and SuDS compliant, including:

  • EcoGrid Bloxx concrete block permeable parking & paving surfaces

  • EcoGrid Grass-fill surfaces

  • EcoGrid Gravel-fill surfaces

  • EcoGrid Resin bound stone systems

  • EcoGrid Resin bound rubber crumb systems

Park Your Caravans & Motorhomes on EcoGrid to Eliminate Mud.... For Good!

Is your campsite suffering muddy conditions yet again?

Park your caravans and motorhomes on EcoGrid permeable paving to virtually eliminate mud all year round!

EcoGrid Blog - Parking Caravans

A problem is affecting camp sites across the country – soil compaction, mud and erosion as a result of heavy use from caravans, motorhomes and other vehicles – a problem these areas face year on year.

Step in EcoGrid.

Our unrivalled paving solution can significantly decrease the impact of traffic (whether that's vehicular or foot) on grass and other natural permeable surfaces. The grid system reinforces the ground, acting like as "snowshoe", thus reducing soil compaction, improving water drainage and as a result preventing mud and erosion.

In these grassed areas, like pictured here, campground owners will now benefit from being able to maintain a non-compacted area for grass to grow in, ensuring good grass coverage while maintaining a permeable surface. The grid protects the roots of the grass and growth areas while providing a stable surface.

On top of all that, EcoGrid is maintenance free so ongoing site costs are decreased too.

EcoGrid has been used globally for over 20 years. The heavy industrial plastic has been engineered to withstand huge loads: cars, vans, motorhomes and even fire engines! Wherever it's used, the concept is simple.

Take EcoGrid E40 for example, our mid-weight product often used for residential driveways, at 40mm deep it really doesn't sound like much until you realise how simple and easily it works. The plastic won't shift, split or crack even when cars park on it; instead it helps spread out the weight of car tyres and distribute the load.

Caravan and camping parks: Don’t get stuck in the mud.At a recent trade show, the clear majority of visitors were from #caravan and #camping sites across the UK and Ireland. The main source of concern was that access roads and pitches were being constantly churned up by the actions of vehicles at all points on the site, resulting in the ‘green’ areas being ruined by unsightly mud swathes across the sites.

There is, of course; a solution: Ecogrid.

Ecogrid for #camping and #caravan sites is:

• Swift and simple to fit, even by an amateur.
• Permeable and permanent
• Can take loadings up to articulated lorry standard
• Can be grass or gravel filled

Pitches can be easily marked out with our bay markers, either flush or raised and we have a range of accessories to ensure smooth fitting. There is also no issue with the fitting of pegs as the base and top of the grids are sufficiently open.

Available for immediate despatch from extensive UK stock with a team of advisors on-hand ready to answer any questions that you may have, Ecogrid is the definitive answer to all your long term surfacing problems.
Grids arrive on-site in palletised form, set on rows of twelve grids (1.33sqm) pre-locked together which are easily lifted from the pallet and laid on prepared or un-prepared ground. You offer up a row of grids and then simply snap-fit the next row and so-on. The grids have a unique patented locking system that ensures that they stay locked together even under extreme circumstances, giving an aesthetic, carbon neutral and sustainable solution to your mud worries.

Think you know about plastics in construction?

For my part, I am only going to concentrate on the plastics that are used for ground reinforcement or landscaping/civils projects. Caveat Emptor is the phrase that springs to mind and, for those of us that didn’t take Latin; this means ‘buyer beware’!
So, what type of plastics are generally used for this type of projects? Here we are talking about the process of injection moulding. Injection moulding is a process where molten plastic is pumped in to a tool or mould that forms the shape of the product that you want to create, the plastic is cooled and the product removed.
• ABS – Acrylonitrile – Butadiene – Styrene.
• PA – Nylon.
• PC – Polycarbonate.
• PP – Polypropylene.
• HIPS – Hi Impact Polystyrene.
• PET - Polyethylene Terephthalate.
• PBT- Polybutylene Terephthalate.

For simplicity, I am only going to concern myself with the two main plastics used in the landscape construction sector. PE and PP. Also, the types of these products used in the process, namely:

Virgin: Virgin plastic is made from petroleum refinement and has not previously been used for production. Virgin can be mixed with a recycled product. This process is generally carried out to reduce costs as virgin plastic costs approximately 40% of recycled plastic. The environmental costs can be far higher though.

Regrind: This is the left over from the moulding process, simply put the bits that ooze out of the mould! Associated issues with this can be:

• A breaking or weakening of the polymer chain making the finished product weaker
• Excessive fines showing as black or white spots, again causing weakness
• Contamination from other materials, wood, metal etc. Again weakness.

Recycled: From a sustainability perspective, this is best. This is the process where used plastics such as carrier bags and bottles are basically cleaned (sometimes not I am afraid!), shredded, sorted, melted down in to pellets and then used to make products in the injection moulding process. Be wary of the term ‘recyclable’ this is not recycled. Most plastics are recyclable and virgin is recyclable.

Gas injection: Usually Nitrogen gas pumped in to a mould while the plastic is still hot. The gas forces the plastic to the sides of the mould and gives a better definition to the finished product. The injection moulding process suffers from shrinkage usually. This is stopped by injecting gas, however the finished product is lighter because it is filled with air pockets. I will leave it to you to ascertain if this affects strength!

UV stabilisation: Without this, products exposed to sunlight or UV radiation can quickly break down and degrade. This takes the form of carbon black, an additive to the moulding process.

OK, so let’s take the plastics themselves.

Polypropylene

• Slippy, Low energy surface.
• Must contain carbon black as PP is particularly susceptible to UV degradation, however, this addition severely inhibits the flame-retardant characteristics of PP.
• Rigid, less forgiving.
• Degrades with exposure to oxygen
• Can be affected by microbial action when in contact with soil

Additives are given to the manufacturing process of Polypropylene to stop UV and O2 degradation, however these additives do not completely stop the process and are expensive. In this world where costs are so important, I will leave it to you to assume how much if any of these additives are used, especially when considering why a product is so much cheaper. Polypropylene is a great product, not necessarily however for hard landscaping

Polyethylene

• Similar expansion rate to PP
• Unaffected by chemicals, UV radiation, acid rain
• Excellent stress crack resistance
• Service life between 50 and 100 years
• Flexible

So, I am pleased to announce that Ecogrid/Ecoraster is made from 100% recycled LDPE (Low density polyethylene. Essentially, bags and bottles go in one end of the factory and the range of grids and accessories come out of the other, also the pallets on which they sit.
